LUSTROUS NORTH
It is interesting how I feel very welcome at one place and completely the opposite at another each time I go on a shooting trip. I had visited the beautiful Biei farmlands in Hokkaido three days in a row but for some reason, I felt alienated and wasn’t able to produce any good shot. A day before the return flight, I realized that there was a voice I kept ignoring persistently, and instead of returning to the same farmlands, I headed west towards Mashike, a small city that lay along the west coast facing the Japan Sea.
When I arrived, I was completely convinced I had made the right decision.
The feeling of being welcome… something I was pursuing for a very long time.
Gazing at the calm and peaceful ocean, I heard an inaudible voice that spoke to me in a cynical but warm and friendly manner that said “what took you so long?”
